Hartford, Connecticut
Hartford is the capital of Connecticut and is located directly on the Connecticut River. Its population is about 124,500, making it the second most populous city in the state. The first English settlers arrived in Hartford in 1635, and originally titled the town Newtown. Later, the town name was changed to Hartford in 1637. Hartford can be recognized for holding the Hartford Convention to discuss secession in 1814. Later, Hartford became the center for abolitionist activities. One major event in the history of Hartford happened on July 6, 1944, the Hartford Circus Fire, one of the deadliest fires in US history. Today, greater Hartford is the center of the insurance industry. It is home to many corporate companies including, Travelers and Aetna. Hartford has also been known as a manufacturing and publishing but many factories have since closed or relocated.
Hartford is known for its abundance of arts and entertainment. Hartford is home to the Arts Council, the Jazz Society, The Antiquarian and Landmarks Society, museums, casino's and much more. Hartford is also home to the Fox Force (World Team Tennis pro League), a rugby football club, professional hockey team and the Rock Cats (the eastern affiliate of the Minnesota Twins).
